TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A roast duck restaurant in Taichung’s Fengyuan District was ordered to shut down Thursday after 47 people reported symptoms of food poisoning.
One customer said their family began experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, and fever after eating roast duck on Tuesday evening, per CTS News. After checking online reviews, they discovered similar complaints from other diners.
The customer said one of their children began showing symptoms early Wednesday morning. Online posts indicated reports of illness from both Monday and Tuesday.
Comments on Google Reviews dating back to May also described food poisoning symptoms. In June, salmonella was detected during testing, and the case was referred to prosecutors.
At the time, the restaurant voluntarily closed and notified the health bureau. However, it reopened Monday under new management and was soon hit with fresh complaints.
Health officials inspected the premises early Thursday, checking refrigerators, work areas, and overall hygiene. The restaurant’s phone rang continuously with more customers reporting symptoms.
The current owner, surnamed Tsai (蔡), advised anyone feeling unwell to seek medical treatment immediately. He said he had taken over the restaurant just three days earlier and was unaware of its history, but insisted the space had been thoroughly cleaned.
Tsai suggested the issue may have stemmed from improper food temperature control or possible water contamination.
So far, 47 people are known to have been affected. The Taichung health bureau has forced the restaurant to shut down.
“We will continue to investigate how many people consumed the food, developed symptoms, or sought medical treatment,” said Tsai Wen-che (蔡文哲), secretary of the city’s food safety office. The Taichung City Government has launched a full investigation, while victims are calling on the restaurant to take responsibility and offer compensation.
