TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Saturday’s recall voting will not go ahead in areas where offices are closed because of a tropical storm, reports said Wednesday.
Voters are set to cast their ballots that day in the recall targeting 24 Kuomintang lawmakers and suspended Hsinchu City Mayor Kao Hung-an (高虹安). However, for the first time, the Central Election Commission visited the Central Weather Administration for more information on Saturday's forecast, CNA reported.
Tropical Storm Francisco is expected to move east to west over the area between Taiwan and Japan, bringing abundant rain over northern Taiwan Thursday and Friday. However, by voting day, the storm is expected to make landfall in China and may even weaken into a tropical depression, per CNA.
Another tropical storm, Co-may, might emerge near the Philippines Thursday, according to weather forecasters. The new storm is likely to move north along Taiwan’s east coast after Friday.
As most elections in Taiwan usually take place during winter, in November or January, consulting the CWA is not necessary as the weather is relatively stable and the likelihood of tropical storms is extremely low, officials said.
