TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) called for continued close cooperation with the EU to ensure peace in the Taiwan Strait, during talks with an EU parliamentary delegation on Wednesday.
Wu met with members of the European Parliament Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield and discussed regional security, countering authoritarian expansion, and defending democratic resilience, CNA reported.
Wu emphasized that Taiwan is on the frontlines of the global democratic alliance and has long faced Chinese gray-zone harassment and hybrid threats. Taiwan will maintain a rational and careful approach to cross-strait affairs while bolstering its defense and promoting societal resilience, he said.
Nathalie Loiseau, chair of the committee, said that delegation members are staunch friends of Taiwan and hoped their visit would strengthen Taiwan-EU bilateral relations. Loiseau noted that Europe, like Taiwan, faces threats from authoritarian regimes.
Democratic partners must learn from one another and defend the rules-based international order to counter military intimidation and foreign disinformation, she said.
The committee was established in February to identify foreign intervention and threats to the EU and find ways to address them. This is the committee’s first visit to Taiwan.
