TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The defense ministry has decided to postpone unveiling the extended-range Hsiung Feng III anti-ship missile system until at least 2027.
The ministry initially approved National Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology’s plan to display the system at this year’s Taipei Aerospace and Defense Technology Exhibition in September, Liberty Times reported. However, to maintain deterrence and prevent sensitive information from being leaked, it walked back on its decision.
The new system was spotted in New Taipei last week during the Han Kuang 41, when President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) went to inspect the missile launchers in Bali District. The missiles were deployed by the Navy’s Hai Feng coastal defense battalion.
The extended-range system reportedly has a range of up to 400 kilometers. The standard Hsiung Feng III system has a maximum range of 250 kilometers.
