TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Central Election Commission on Friday announced an additional five recall votes targeting Kuomintang lawmakers on Aug. 23.
A first round of recalls had been set for July 26 for 24 KMT lawmakers and the suspended former Taiwan People’s Party mayor of Hsinchu City, Kao Hung-an (高虹安). The commission later also approved recall votes for two KMT legislators in Nantou on Aug. 23, the same day as a national referendum about the restart of the Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant in Pingtung.
The five KMT lawmakers added to the Aug. 23 list were Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang (江啟臣), Yang Chiung-ying (楊瓊瓔), and Yen Kuan-heng (顏寬恒) in Taichung, Lo Ming-tsai (羅明才) in New Taipei, and Lin Szu-ming (林思銘) in Hsinchu County, the Liberty Times reported. The latest decision by the commission means that 31 of the KMT’s 52 legislators will face a recall vote.
The two other recalls scheduled for Aug. 23 are Ma Wen-chun (馬文君) and Yu Hao (游顥) in Nantou.
Recall campaigners accused the KMT of leaning too far toward China and of hampering efforts to strengthen Taiwan’s defenses. The KMT in return accused the government of trying to suppress the opposition.
