TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Work on an underwater cable partly owned by Chunghwa Telecom and running between Southeast Asia and Japan has been completed, reports said Friday.
The Southeast Asia-Japan Cable 2, also known as SJC2, connects Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, South Korea, and Japan over a distance of 10,500 kilometers, per CNA. The cable comes ashore in Taiwan at two locations, in Fangshan, Pingtung County, and Tamsui, New Taipei City.
The project will strengthen the stability and resilience of the region’s basic telecommunication infrastructure, Chunghwa Telecom said. The cable can transmit 126 terabits per second, or 126 trillion bits of data per second, in a breakthrough for the Asia Pacific, according to the telecom operator.
Taiwan has emphasized the importance of undersea cables to strengthen the country’s resilience. Damage caused by ships with links to Chinese interests are thought to be responsible for several breakdowns of underwater cables around Taiwan.
