TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) met with a Brazilian politician during a stopover in Sao Paulo on his way back from Paraguay, reports said Thursday.
Lin had visited Taiwan’s only ally in South America to mark the 68th anniversary of official diplomatic relations. On his way back Monday, he met in Sao Paulo with Gil Diniz, a member of the Sao Paulo State Legislative Assembly, per CNA.
The minister expressed the hope that Taiwan and Brazil could develop more substantive relations, while thanking Diniz for his statements supporting Taiwan, despite pressure from China.
In a post on his X feed, the Brazilian politician said they discussed geopolitics and military threats in the Taiwan Strait. He emphasized his role as the chair of the Sao Paulo-Taiwan Parliamentary Front and the fact he had visited Taiwan twice.
Lin said Diniz had asked him for the meeting after finding out online that he was visiting Paraguay. A third of Sao Paulo state legislators have joined the pro-Taiwan association. The foreign minister added that state-level lawmakers and governments could form a starting point for both countries to deepen exchanges and intensify trade relations.
