TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Thursday reaffirmed the close partnership between Taiwan and Guatemala during talks with Nery Abilio Ramos y Ramos, the president of Guatemala’s congress.
Lai pointed out that Taiwan and Guatemala have enjoyed over 90 years of diplomatic relations and cooperate in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and women’s empowerment, CNA reported. He said the two countries signed agreements that have strengthened political consultation mechanisms and investment cooperation when Guatemala President Bernardo Arevalo visited Taiwan last month.
He added the two countries are key partners in a global democratic alliance and will promote regional and global prosperity.
Lai thanked Ramos for his continued support of Taiwan’s participation in the international community. The lawmaker helped pass pro-Taiwan resolutions in the Guatemalan Congress and issued statements rejecting China’s misinterpretation of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, the president said.
Ramos said his cross-party delegation reflects a shared belief in the enduring Taiwan–Guatemala friendship and shows the partnership is not limited to government-to-government interactions. He expressed confidence that the friendship between Taiwan and Guatemala will grow stronger in the future.
