TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – As part of the Han Kuang 41 drills, the Navy simulated the arrival of a US military supply ship in the port of Hualien, reports said Wednesday.
The ship used in the exercise was the Hsuhai, a dock landing ship that served as an Anchorage-class ship in the US Navy until 1999. The event simulated a US carrier group approaching Taiwan’s east coast, with the landing ship entering Hualien harbor under the protection of the Navy and Air Force, the Liberty Times reported.
The ship proceeded to offload vital military supplies, but the Navy maintained a low profile during the simulation, the report said. A similar drill had been planned for the Han Kuang 40 maneuvers last year, but because they had been cut short due a typhoon warning, the arrival of the ship never took place.
The Hsuhai arrived in Hualien at 6 a.m. Wednesday flanked by two Navy patrol vessels. An air defense unit and a mechanized infantry group protected the event on land. The offloading of supplies and the refueling of the ship were completed by noon, allowing the Hsuhai to leave Hualien.
