TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — An armored vehicle conducting a training mission with the annual Han Kuang drills overturned on Tuesday at Taitung's Zhihang Air Force Base, sending two soldiers to the hospital.
The V-150 wheeled vehicle operated by Military Police slipped while traveling up a slope, injuring both the driver and a commander aboard the vehicle. Both remained conscious, per CNA.
Taitung County Fire Department received a call for assistance around 1 p.m. that soldiers were injured at the base. As firefighters prepared to deploy, military personnel said a military ambulance would take the soldiers to the hospital.
Two soldiers in camouflage uniforms were later brought to Taitung Mackay Memorial Hospital. The injured soldiers were identified as a 25-year-old driver surnamed Hsu (許) who had abrasions on his face, and the 38-year-old soldier surnamed Tsai (蔡) who had abrasions and lacerations on his limbs.
The Air Force confirmed the accident occurred on the seventh day of the Han Kuang drills. It said the vehicle was returning from a mission within the camp when the accident occurred.
According to the Air Force, personnel have been sent to investigate the cause of the accident and ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.
