TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The KMT has expanded its list of legislators at risk of being recalled as recall elections draw closer.
Citing party insiders, ETtoday reported the KMT’s internal list now includes six lawmakers, up from four in early July. The list comprises Taipei Legislators Wang Hung-wei (王鴻薇) and Hsu Chiao-hsin (徐巧芯), New Taipei Legislators Yeh Yuan-chih (葉元之) and Liao Hsien-hsiang (廖先翔), Taitung Legislator Huang Chien-pin (黃建賓), and Taoyuan Legislator Niu Hsu-ting (牛煦庭).
KMT officials assess that Niu remains vulnerable due to his confrontational political style and limited time to solidify local support since entering office. Wang and Hsu are seen as politically capable but lack strong factional backing, leaving them exposed to organized recall efforts.
Yeh, previously seen as at risk due to weak local support, is considered somewhat more secure after the KMT intensified its anti-recall campaign. Meanwhile, Liao’s position is complicated by a social housing scandal in Xizhi District, a key part of his constituency.
Huang is seen as the most vulnerable, having won in Taitung due to a split within the pro-DPP camp. The KMT hopes to retain at least three of the six contested seats, making that the benchmark for success in the recall fight.
The DPP is targeting 12 lawmakers, per ETtoday. These include Taipei Legislator Lee Yen-hsiu (李彥秀), Taichung Legislators Liao Wei-hsiang (廖偉翔), Huang Chien-hao (黃健豪), and Lo Ting-wei (羅廷瑋), Taoyuan Legislator Tu Chuan-chi (涂權吉), Hualien Legislator Fu Kun-chi (傅崐萁), and the aforementioned six legislators.
A DPP source told ETtoday that the party is concentrating efforts on Taipei and Hualien, aiming to push voter turnout above 50%. Within Taichung, the KMT believes one of the three targeted lawmakers is genuinely at risk, with turnout expected to be the deciding factor.
Fu's situation in Hualien has reportedly stabilized after the KMT began organizing rallies on his behalf.
Political commentator and Formosa Chair Wu Tzu-chia (吳子嘉) predicted the DPP is unlikely to recall more than five KMT lawmakers, citing weak grassroots mobilization, per Newtalk. Wu argued that while the DPP has succeeded in painting the KMT as CCP aligned, the DPP's lack of local outreach limits the recall campaign’s potential.
Former DPP Legislator Shen Fu-hsiung (沈富雄) echoed Wu’s analysis, calling the CCP-linked image the KMT’s biggest liability, per Newtalk. He added that unless the KMT can shed this perception, not even errors by President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) or the efforts of recall groups will be enough to prevent the loss of three to seven legislative seats.
