TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) Sunday called on volunteer firefighters from across Taiwan to assist with rebuilding efforts in the city.
Tainan is struggling to deal with damage from Typhoon Danas, which struck southern Taiwan on July 6 and 7. After surveying damaged homes, Huang asked for more manpower to repair the roofs of private residences, reported UDN.
On Friday, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Huang met with victims from several districts, many of whom asked for more support from the government. Huang pledged to apply the city’s resources to help speed the recovery of damaged communities, reported CNA.
Many private homes are in urgent need of help in six districts: Qigu, Jiangjun, Xutjia, Liuying, Xinying, and Houbi. The local government has reportedly gathered a large stock of waterproof canvas to distribute to damaged residences, but able-bodied workers are urgently needed to help install it, per UDN.
Huang called on firefighters to show their love and solidarity with the people of Tainan by coming to assist with the cleanup. He asked them to bring their own ladders and tools, adding the government would coordinate and dispatch crews to areas that need assistance.
The mayor thanked the many volunteers who have already arrived to help clear roads, repair damaged electricity poles, and restore water to affected communities. The people of Tainan are grateful, he said.
Tainan City Fire Department also issued a similar call on its Facebook fan page, with a post that said, “To rebuild our home town, we need your help.”
While 90% of homes in Tainan have had power restored, an estimated 26,640 homes were still without electricity on Saturday afternoon, per CNA.
