TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — While Trump's new tariff rate for Taiwan has yet to be announced, he plans to impose 15% or 20% across-the-board tariffs on most trade partners.
According to NBC News, Trump said on Thursday he expects to apply the new tariff rates to most remaining US trade partners not already subject to updated tariffs. A Cabinet official told the media on Friday that Taiwan's negotiating team continues to engage with the US, focusing on protecting national and industrial interests, public health, and food security, per CNA.
As for when the results will be announced, the official said Taiwan and the US are continuing to communicate on economic and trade issues such as tariffs. Any updates on the negotiations will be shared with the public in due course.
Trump has recently announced new reciprocal tariff rates for some countries that are expected to take effect on Aug. 1. Taiwan’s competitors, Japan and South Korea, have been assigned a 25% rate, while Vietnam and the Philippines face a 20% rate.
Cabinet Spokesperson Michelle Lee (李慧芝) said Wednesday the government remains optimistic about the talks. She added the two sides are arranging the next round of in-person negotiations and that Vice Premier Cheng Li-chun (鄭麗君) is still in Washington.
On April 2, Trump announced the US would impose a 32% tariff on Taiwan-made goods, before announcing a 90-day pause on April 9. President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on April 11 said that Taiwan is in the first group of countries that will be negotiating with Washington over Trump's tariffs.
