TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei is the top city globally for US digital nomads, according to a Dublin-based international eSIM provider.
On Thursday, Holafly released its list of the best cities for remote work for US passport holders. The rankings considered visa policies, mobile internet speeds, internet costs, utility bills, rent, and healthcare.
Taipei was rated “the most well-rounded city” with an overall score of 73.9. Bangkok and Prague joined it in the top three for their visa-friendly policies, quality healthcare, affordable cost of living, and remote work amenities.
Amsterdam placed fourth, followed by Dubai, Madrid, Vienna, Phuket, Pattaya, and Osaka. All 10 cities offer US travelers visa-free entry for at least 60 days, allowing for flexible short- to mid-term stays.
“From affordable living to a world-class healthcare system, the capital of Taiwan strikes a powerful balance between productivity and lifestyle,” the firm said. It also noted that US passport holders can stay in Taiwan visa-free for up to 90 days.
Despite having fewer coworking spaces, Taipei offers fast, affordable internet and a burgeoning remote work culture. The city's relatively moderate rent combined with inexpensive utilities and transportation, makes it "a smart financial choice."
The average price for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center was listed at NT$48,838 (US$1,669.96), the fifth-lowest among the 15 cities surveyed. Taiwan’s average monthly utility cost ranked third cheapest at NT$2,457.
A one-way public transit ticket in Taipei costs NT$24, also the third lowest. Taxi fares were the second cheapest at NT$39.
