TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Thai national has been indicted by the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office for attempting to smuggle over 40 kilograms of marijuana into Taiwan, the authorities said Thursday.
According to the Aviation Police Bureau, the woman arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport on a flight from Bangkok, posing as a tourist. However, her travel plans raised suspicion because she intended only a brief stay yet checked in two large suitcases.
Customs and aviation police inspected her luggage and found over 60 packages of marijuana concealed inside, totaling 40.59 kg. The estimated street value of the drugs exceeded NT$60 million (US$2 million), according to CNA.
During questioning, the woman admitted she agreed to transport the drugs in exchange for NT$98,000 and free accommodation. Aviation Police Bureau Director Chen Po-chuan (陳博全) said an investigation is ongoing to trace the smuggling operation's source and identify other possible accomplices.
The bureau also issued a public warning about the dangers of marijuana use, citing potential side effects such as confusion, memory loss, and impaired cognition. Long-term use may lead to depression, anxiety, or hallucinations.
