TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The second day of the Han Kuang 41 drills Thursday included exercises to prevent Chinese military planes from landing at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.
The Army’s 269th Mechanized Infantry Brigade rolled out three CM-11 Brave Tiger tanks and three CM-22 mortar vehicles in Taoyuan’s Dayuan District, the Liberty Times reported. The military positioned the equipment near a temple in the area as a countermeasure against landings by Chinese air force troops targeting the airport.
The CM-22s simulated the firing of 120mm mortar shells at the airport and the coastline, while the tanks played a warning role. The aim was to familiarize officers with the airport neighborhood and with the practical side of responding to an attack, the military said.
The participants in Thursday’s drills also practiced with Android Team Awareness Kits, a communication system resembling smartphones, per CNA. The system allows separate combatants to watch the same battlefield images while sharing information about enemy positions.
The July 9-18 Han Kuang 41 war games also include urban warfare, sheltering exercises, drills with M1A2T tanks, and a blockade of the Tamsui River, according to the Liberty Times.
