TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — In the wake of Typhoon Danas, Tainan has installed solar-powered charging stations in Yanshuei District, providing emergency electricity to residents still without power.
Four charging stations were deployed on Tuesday, including two mobile solar-storage units provided free of charge by Dingyan Engineering, per CNA. The other two stations were set up at Chunghwa Telecom’s Yanshuei branch and the local fire station.
Chen Wen-chi (陳文琪), head of Yanshuei District, said the effort was coordinated under the direction of Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) to ease disruption to residents’ lives.
With public loudspeakers down, village leaders went door-to-door informing residents. One urgent case involved a household caring for a bedridden patient who needed a suction device powered. Just as the battery was failing, the mobile solar unit arrived in time to restore power and avert danger.
Residents brought phones and power banks to charge at the stations, which will remain in service until Taipower fully restores electricity. Dingyan Engineering’s data shows each mobile base features 10 solar panels and a 20 kWh battery, capable of overnight use with 30 to 40% power remaining by morning, even under cloudy skies.
Each station has eight outlets, and users are advised to bring their chargers and keep an eye on their belongings. According to Taipower, Typhoon Danas affected nearly 1,400 power poles and knocked out power for 829,000 households.
