TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Civil Aviation Administration on Tuesday said that Chinese civilian planes tracked over Kinmen were not part of gray zone tactics, saying they were diverted over the island due to bad weather.
On Saturday, the Facebook page Taiwan ADIZ posted a video from Flightradar24 showing 14 Chinese commercial aircraft flying over Kinmen from 5:40 p.m. to 6:35 p.m. on Friday. The post questioned the explanation of weather avoidance, noting that other aircraft were still using the M503 route at the time.
The CAA told CNA on Tuesday that weather conditions in the Taiwan Strait were poor due to Typhoon Danas. The Shanghai Area Control Center had notified Taiwan’s air traffic control that some flights would be rerouted and might pass over Kinmen.
Taiwanese controllers informed their Chinese counterparts not to enter the Kinmen Terminal Control Area, a section of airspace around the island under Taiwan’s flight management. The CAA also passed this information to military air defense units, which monitored the situation.
According to the CAA, all Chinese aircraft remained above 16,000 feet (4,876 meters), which is outside the Kinmen Terminal Control Area, and did not enter Taiwan’s airspace.
