TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Haiti Foreign Minister Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste held talks with President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) Tuesday.
Haiti is one of Taiwan’s 12 official diplomatic allies. The president thanked the country’s government ministers for speaking out on behalf of Taiwan at international meetings, including the World Health Assembly in May.
Lai noted the two countries are approaching the 70th anniversary of official diplomatic ties next year. Their cooperation in the fields of education, social security, and basic infrastructure had produced beneficial results, Lai said in a statement on the Presidential Office website.
He added that Taiwan would continue to promote the improvement of healthcare, food safety, and general living standards in Haiti. He noted the foreign minister’s visit is the highest-level visit by a Haitian government official since late President Jovenel Moise traveled to Taiwan in 2018.
Jean-Baptiste emphasized how the need for cooperation and solidarity is even more important as the world faces growing problems and Haiti faces one of its most difficult periods in history. The two countries need to reflect on how to move forward and deepen their relationship to benefit their people, the minister said.
