TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Typhoon Danas has inflicted more than NT$1 billion (US$34.4 million) in damages to Taiwan’s agricultural products and facilities, according to the Ministry of Agriculture's latest assessment released Monday night.
Agricultural losses totaled NT$695 million, affecting crops across 9,067 hectares, with 30% of crop area damaged. About 2,750 hectares were classified as total crop losses, according to CNA.
Key crops impacted include bananas, pomelos, bamboo shoots, oranges, and ponkans. Bananas sustained the highest individual crop losses, estimated at NT$130 million, with 1,098 hectares damaged and a loss rate of 35%.
Pomelo losses followed at NT$121 million, bamboo shoots at NT$79.6 million, oranges at NT$62.7 million, and ponkans at NT$55.2 million.
Chiayi County suffered the highest agricultural losses, totaling NT$478 million, or about 48% of the nationwide total. Tainan followed with NT$260.5 million, or 26%, Yunlin County with NT$245.7 million, or 24%, and Pingtung County with NT$10.8 million, or 1%.
Livestock losses were estimated at NT$10.35 million, with chickens accounting for the majority of the damage at over NT$10 million. Additional losses were reported among pigs, geese, and cattle.
The fisheries sector suffered estimated losses of NT$183.8 million. Oysters were the most severely affected aquaculture product.
Damage to private agricultural facilities reached NT$116 million. This includes NT$33.3 million in infrastructure damage, primarily involving horizontal trellis screen houses and plastic-covered greenhouses.
Livestock facility damage was estimated at NT$83 million, largely due to structural impacts on animal housing.
The Ministry of Agriculture stated that it will continue to compile and update damage estimates as post-typhoon assessments continue.
