TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Typhoon Danas disrupted transportation across Taiwan on Sunday as 258 domestic flights were canceled and Taiwan Railway suspended service on the South Link Line.
An estimated 8,000 tourists are stranded in Penghu as flights and ferry services were halted. According to the transport ministry, more than 100 flights from Penghu to Taiwan are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. Depending on weather conditions, additional flights or military aircraft may be added, according to PTS.
The arrival of the typhoon caused consumers to stock up on vegetables and canned foods.
One local vendor said, "Everything we eat and use for daily life has to be shipped in by boat. The arrival of the typhoon has made this more inconvenient. We may have to wait a few more days as there should be a boat on Wednesday."
In addition, some 209 tourists were reportedly stuck in Xiaoliuqiu.
Taiwan High Speed Rail ran normally throughout the typhoon. The only disruption to the TRA was the South Link Line in both directions beginning on Sunday at 2 p.m., though travel has since been restored.
President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) visited a central disaster response center on Sunday afternoon and called on the central and local governments to work together. "The path of Typhoon Danas is quite special this time, traveling from south to north, mainly passing through the Taiwan Strait. Because the western part is mostly plains and densely populated, we should be prepared for a greater impact," said Lai.
Mandarin Airlines and UNI Air canceled all domestic flights on Sunday, as domestic airlines mainly service outer islands such as Penghu, Matsu, and Kinmen. Mandarin Airlines said it planned to resume flights on Monday afternoon.
