TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – An estimated 300 reservists showed up at a temple in Taoyuan’s Guishan District Saturday morning to register for training coinciding with the Han Kuang 41 military exercises.
The July 9-18 version of the annual drills will last 10 days and, for the first time, include concurrent urban warfare and shelter training at supermarkets. The 206th Infantry Brigade of the Sixth Army Corps expects more than 2,000 reservists for two weeks of training, the Liberty Times reported.
The military said the aim of calling up reservists was to improve their familiarity with the handling of weapons and with a warfare environment. Following registration, the reservists would be allocated courses relevant to their past military experience.
On the first day, they were asked to assemble and disassemble guns, but over the remaining two weeks, they will receive legal education, training in how to treat wounded, and firearms practice.
The Han Kuang 41 drills will feature unscripted actions to reflect more realistic combat situations. The exercises will also include responses to fake news, Chinese propaganda, and the sabotage of basic infrastructure, according to defense officials.
