TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Opposition lawmakers decided Friday to postpone consideration of a package including a cash handout to the public as they wanted to wait for the Trump administration to announce its tariffs on Taiwan imports.
The special bill proposed by the government would allow the allocation of NT$410 billion (US$14.16 billion), with part of the funds helping to mitigate the impact of the US tariffs. The Kuomintang wanted to add a provision for NT$10,000 cash handouts to each citizen, while the Taiwan People’s Party proposed NT$6,000.
However, KMT Legislator Wang Hung-wei (王鴻薇) said Friday the opposition had agreed to temporarily suspend review of the bill until a clearer picture emerged about the level of US tariffs for Taiwan, per CNA. President Donald Trump said he had started sending letters to several countries informing them of the tariffs, though he did not mention which ones.
Lawmakers first wanted to hear from the various sectors of the economy how they would be affected by the tariffs before deciding on the funding package, Wang said. She voiced fears that Taiwan would be targeted with high tariffs.
Even though Vietnam had opened its market completely to imports from the US, the Trump administration had still decided to slap a 20% tariff on imports from Vietnam. The figure had grave implications for Taiwan, Wang said, adding that she expected the amount of the tariff to be announced next week.
