TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tropical Storm Danas is moving toward southern Taiwan, prompting the Central Weather Administration to issue a sea warning on Saturday.
As of 8 a.m. on Saturday, Danas was centered about 400 kilometers southwest of Eluanbi. CWA senior technical specialist Wu Wan-hua (伍婉華) said the storm will head toward the southern Taiwan Strait, with its greatest impact expected from Sunday through Monday, per CNA.
The CWA also issued a heavy rain advisory for Hengchun as Danas’ outer circulation approaches, warning that sudden showers and lightning could occur with the arrival of convective cloud systems.
Wu noted that as Danas reaches the northern Taiwan Strait on Monday, it is expected to weaken with rainfall easing, though this will depend on its path. Asked whether Danas could turn into a typhoon, Wu said that conditions are unfavorable and that it will turn into a weak typhoon at best.
However, even a weak typhoon can produce strong winds and rain, Wu warned, advising residents in Penghu to stay on alert and follow safety instructions.
