TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Bologna Illustrators Exhibition, opening July 12 at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, presents a mix of imaginative works for young readers while offering space for reflection through rich, narrative-driven illustrations.
Founded in 1967, the exhibition stems from the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy, one of the world’s leading events for children’s publishing. Each year, over a thousand illustrators from around the globe submit entries in sets of five artworks, with selected pieces then presented in a traveling exhibition.
This year’s edition features 101 illustrators and a record 433 artworks. The selected illustrations explore a variety of themes, offering expressive and visually compelling interpretations of daily life, imagination, and personal reflection.
Among the participants are four Taiwanese artists: Chen Wei-hsuan (陳瑋璿), Huang Liang-hsin (黃亮昕), Pan Hsin-ping (潘心屏), and Tai Wei-chun (戴維君), whose works will be on view alongside international entries. Running through Oct. 6, the exhibition is divided into four themed sections, each offering a distinct lens into the illustrators’ creative worlds.
“A Gate to the Quiet” opens the exhibition with scenes from everyday life reimagined in tranquil, dreamlike settings. One featured piece by Chen depicts a Taiwanese fruit stand, inviting viewers to pause and reflect on the quieter aspects of daily experience.
The second section, “Atelier de Reves,” highlights the inner landscapes of 21 illustrators, who use a variety of techniques and media to express emotional and conceptual ideas. These works invite personal interpretation, emphasizing the connection between artist and audience.
In “Isles of Dreaming,” the exhibition presents a wide range of styles and narratives, from whimsical and fantastical to poetic and introspective. The works in this section speak to audiences of all ages, encouraging exploration and emotional engagement.
The final section, “Dream’s Gentle Echo,” draws together subconscious imagery and emotional storytelling from all 101 illustrators. The collection encourages visitors to consider the lingering impact of imagination and the stories that continue beyond the final page.
General admission is NT$390 (US$13.50). The exhibition aims to engage children and adults, offering an experience that reflects the diversity and depth of contemporary illustration.
