TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Navy officers have begun training after the arrival of five land-based Harpoon anti-ship missile launch vehicles and one radar truck from the US, reports said Saturday.
The sale of 400 RTM-84L-4 Harpoon Block II missiles, four RTM-84L-4 Harpoon Block II maneuver missiles, 100 launcher transporter units, and 25 radar trucks was approved in 2020. The first delivery of related equipment occurred in late September.
A Navy unit had started training on the five launch trucks and one radar vehicle which recently arrived, the Liberty Times reported. Before the end of the year, 32 transporter units were expected, with the remaining 68 scheduled to arrive before 2028.
The training phase reportedly involved experts and technical personnel from the US traveling to Taiwan. The final phase would be the shipping of the missiles, with the first batch expected to arrive by the end of this year. According to the timetable, the relevant Taiwanese Navy unit would already have received the necessary timing by the time the Harpoon missiles were delivered.
The Navy was planning to launch its Coastal Defense Command managing the missiles in January 2026. It was hoping a first group of Harpoon systems would have arrived and be ready by that time, the report said.
