TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — An encounter between two internet celebrities and a restaurant owner in Penghu led to the restaurant’s closure.
The Korean influencer Yoon Doi and her Taiwanese friend Li Chia-yi (李家儀), both members of the K-pop group FANATICS, were recently touring Penghu and made a stop at a popular local restaurant, A-Chia’s Oysters, reported UDN. Yoon and Li recorded their experience at the restaurant, and Yoon uploaded the video to her YouTube channel on June 22.
In the video, the owner of the restaurant can be seen speaking and behaving in an impolite manner towards the women. The women were shocked by his poor hospitality and service, with Yoon labeling the video her “most unhappy experience in Taiwan.”
After the video was uploaded, A-Chia’s Oysters began drawing public interest, and plenty of criticism. As of Friday, the video had accumulated over 550,000 views.
In response to the incident, Penghu County Magistrate Chen Kuang-fu (陳光復) apologized to Yoon and Li. He said the owner’s treatment of his customers was regrettable, especially because it reflected negatively on Penghu’s reputation and tourism industry.
The county government also discovered that the establishment did not have a registered business license.
Two days after the video was released, the local government delivered a closure notice to A-Chia’s Oysters, allowing for a 15-day window to remedy the situation. However, in an interview on Friday, the owner said he will not try to obtain a license, nor will he seek to open another business.
The owner did not apologize for the incident, but did admit that he lost control of his emotions. He accused the women of taking advantage of others to make money and said that they arrived late, without a reservation or a notice that they would be filming.
In response to negative criticism of his behavior, he said that he is an honest person and does not care what reviewers post online, per UDN.
