TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan could see three to five typhoons during the latter half of the year, the Central Weather Administration said Friday.
Forecasters said the number was normal for the country, the Liberty Times reported. So far this year, two typhoons have formed in the Northwest Pacific, instead of the usual 4.3 average.
Between June and December, 21 to 25 typhoons are forecast to affect the region, but only three to five are expected to influence the weather in Taiwan.
A new feature from the weather service is a warning about typhoon wind strength for seaside townships, per CNA. The service aims to allow residents to better prepare and local authorities to consider additional safety and response measures. The administration advised the public to follow typhoon updates through press conferences, live streaming, apps, and media reports.
Forecasters said two routes were the most likely for typhoons from July to September. They are expected to move east to west across the Philippines or south to north at some distance east of Taiwan. Whether the typhoons impact Taiwan will depend on how large the storms are.
Looking at other aspects of the weather during the summer, forecasters said temperatures might be higher than usual, though the amount of rainfall was likely to be close to average.
