TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A live camera feed in Kaohsiung Port went offline Thursday as Taiwan’s first indigenous submarine, the Narwhal, headed out for its second day of sea acceptance tests.
The Narwhal began its tests on June 17, nearly two months behind schedule. However, the Navy said the vessel remains on track for commissioning in November as originally planned.
Submarine enthusiasts had hoped to catch a glimpse of the Narwhal departing, but the live stream camera—installed by the Kaohsiung Cultural Affairs Department at the Hongmaogang Cultural Park—failed to broadcast Thursday morning, according to the Liberty Times.
Authorities said the YouTube feed was suspended at the request of CSBC Corporation, Taiwan, the submarine’s builder. Normal coverage was expected to resume at 5 p.m. Thursday. On the first day of testing, the YouTube channel’s subscriber count jumped from 300 to 460.
The Navy said Wednesday the sea acceptance tests are expected to conclude by Sept. 30. The trials include surface sailing and dives to depths of 50 meters and 200 meters.
