TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s first indigenous submarine will complete its sea acceptance tests by Sept. 30, the Navy said Wednesday.
The scheduling means the Narwhal will be ready for its commissioning in November as originally planned, the Liberty Times reported. April had been initially named as the date for the launch of the sea tests, but instead, the submarine only ventured out to sea for the first time on June 17.
The Narwhal will make three or four surface journeys to test its stability in different conditions before diving to 50 meters and 200 meters, Navy Chief of Staff Chiu Chun-jung (邱俊榮) told lawmakers Wednesday. Tests will pay attention to communications, sonar, and weapons systems, he said.
The Narwhal, also known as Hai Kun, was built in Kaohsiung by CSBC Corporation, Taiwan. Depending on the test results, the country plans to order seven more submarines.
