TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Tuesday called on Taiwan’s major political factions to unite in opposing the CCP and safeguard the country.
During the second stop of his “Ten Lectures on National Unity” tour, Lai focused on the theme of unity, per Tai Sounds. He outlined a strategy to bridge the domestic divide between those who refer to the country as the “Republic of China (ROC)” and those who call it “Taiwan.”
Lai argued that if ROC supporters reject the CCP and Taiwan advocates are committed to the nation's defense, then both camps can work together to uphold sovereignty and strengthen Taiwan. This, he said, reflects the growing mainstream consensus and the shared values uniting Taiwanese today
He noted strong public support for expressing political will through democratic means. Those who stand for defending Taiwan and those who oppose the CCP under the ROC banner can jointly resist aggression and annexation by China.
He added that unity brings strength, and the core of democracy lies in finding unity amid differences. Political parties across the spectrum should unite in defending Taiwan’s sovereignty and uphold its democratic constitutional system.
He said the ROC faction opposes the CCP, and the Taiwan faction seeks to defend the country. Therefore, he argued, “You are not a real ROC supporter if you do not oppose the CCP, and you are not a real Taiwan supporter if you do not safeguard Taiwan.”
The president said the combination of the two factions will naturally generate strong unity, drive national progress, and resist annexation.
Lai concluded by saying the ROC flag symbolizes ROC supporters, while the Taiwan independence flag represents Taiwan advocates. When united against the CCP, this alliance embodies Taiwan’s mainstream public opinion.
