TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Food and Drug Administration has blocked a shipment of mayonnaise imported by Carrefour supermarkets after detecting excessive levels of preservatives, reports said Tuesday.
The product, from the Spanish brand Helios, did not enter the country, per CNA. Tests revealed it contained 1.7 grams of sorbic acid per kilogram—well above the legal limit of 1 gram.
Although the supplier had no prior violations, the FDA said it will raise the inspection rate for future shipments of the mayonnaise from the standard 2%–10% to 20%–50%.
Additional recent border checks uncovered excessive pesticide residues in frozen redcurrants from France, issues with fishcakes from Indonesia, and problems with PVC food tubing imported from the US.
