TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan has donated a solar energy system to Fiji to promote green energy in the Pacific island nation’s rural areas, reports said Tuesday.
Fiji, which does not maintain official diplomatic relations with Taiwan, expressed gratitude for Taipei’s friendship and goodwill, per CNA. Taiwan’s envoy to Fiji, Joseph Chow (周進發), presented the system to Moape Rokosuka, director of corporate services in the Office of the Prime Minister.
The solar system will benefit the 350 residents of Naviavia Village in the province of Cakaudrove. Saint Paul Elementary School in the village will gain access to a stable and clean energy supply, the report said.
Chow noted that Taiwan and Fiji are both part of the “blue Pacific continent.” He said the two countries share concerns over climate change and energy insecurity, and will continue working together for a greener, more prosperous future in the region.
