TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The KMT and TPP proposed Friday a constitutional amendment to get rid of the Control Yuan.
The government supervisory body has 29 members and can impeach and censure government officials. It promotes human rights protection through its National Human Rights Commission.
KMT Legislator Lo Chih-chiang (羅智強) and TPP Chair Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) want to make amendments to the Additional Articles of the Constitution, per CNA. These amendments would effectively eliminate the Control Yuan and transfer its audit power to the Legislative Yuan.
At a news conference Huang was quoted as saying, “The public is fed up of this committee of big baby supervisors.” He later confirmed the proposal to get rid of the Control Yuan had the support of at least 29 lawmakers, meaning the proposal can move forward.
In response, DPP Legislative Caucus Whip Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤) said that getting rid of the Control Yuan was a long-held wish of the party. However, he decried the politicization of the issue by the opposition.
Abolishing the Control Yuan through a constitutional amendment requires support from a minimum of one-quarter of the 113-member Legislative Yuan. Three-quarters of the members must pass it at a quorate meeting.
