TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — In response to Israel’s attack on Iran and rapidly escalating regional tensions, Taiwan raised a travel alert for both countries on Friday.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely monitoring events in the Middle East. They urge Taiwanese citizens to avoid travel to the region, the ministry said in a press release.
In recognition of Israel’s declared state of emergency and closure of its airspace, Taiwan suspended the Taiwan-Israel bilateral working holiday program. The program was launched less than two weeks ago.
According to the ministry, it is estimated that there are 238 Taiwanese visiting or residing in Israel. The government is aware of seven Taiwanese visiting or residing in Iran.
The Taiwanese in both countries have been accounted for and are currently safe, according to the foreign ministry’s press release. It asks Taiwanese in Israel, Iran, or neighboring countries to monitor the situation.
If in need of assistance, Taiwanese should contact the closest Taipei Economic and Cultural Office. Taiwan maintains an office in Tel Aviv, while Taiwanese in Iran should contact the Commercial Office of Taipei in Dubai.
