TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Defense Minister Wellington Koo (顧立雄) on Wednesday said that China's simultaneous deployment of two aircraft carriers to the Pacific for the first time shows its “expansionist agenda."
Before a Legislative Yuan session, Koo was asked by the media about the presence of both carriers in the Western Pacific, per CNA. Koo said the Ministry of National Defense has full knowledge of the situation.
Koo said this demonstrates China's intention to expand its reach. “Two aircraft carriers crossing the First Island Chain and extending into the Second Island Chain convey a definite political message that reveals China's expansionist agenda,” said Koo.
Asked about the US-Taiwan Defense Industry Forum held Wednesday, Koo said Taiwan seeks to establish a self-sufficient drone production supply chain, a non-Chinese supply chain, and enter the international defense supply chain market.
When asked about recent civilian-run Taiwan Defense TTX, Koo said he welcomed public interest in national defense and the MND is open to considering the conclusions and opinions generated. He added that the military has operational plans in place to respond to gray zone incursions and will adjust them through wargaming and live-fire exercises.
The Japanese Ministry of Defense reported that on June 7, the Shandong was sailing approximately 550 km southeast of Miyako Island. Meanwhile, the Liaoning operated in waters southwest of Minamitorishima between June 7 and 8, marking the first time a Chinese aircraft carrier has crossed the Second Island Chain.
