TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The 10th Railway Bento Festival is being held at Taipei Main Station from Friday through Monday.
Taiwan Railway Corp., organizer of the festival, said that this year's event features participation from more than 50 local and international brands, including Taiwan High Speed Rail, tourism and hospitality businesses, and foodservice companies. The event was previously held at Kaohsiung Station in May, per CNA.
The railway company set up bento stalls, a railway-themed restaurant, an interactive experience zone, and a 10th-anniversary-themed display cake at the venue. It said that a limited number of specialty bento boxes and co-branded products will be available daily.
The company said that its bento boxes are made with local ingredients. They include certified seafood and beef, along with specialties such as Matsu Ji-Guang buns, all served in bento boxes shaped like the E500 train.
Taiwan High Speed Rail unveiled three new bento flavors at the event. The company said that it is the first update to its bento menu in eight years, with the new offerings featuring Taiwanese flavors such as Chiayi chicken rice with shrimp and pumpkin, braised pork ribs with rice, and king oyster mushrooms with oatmeal rice.
THSR said the new bento boxes are prepared by Kaohsiung Airport Catering Services and will be available for purchase at high-speed rail stations and on board starting in July. It added the boxes will feature a new design highlighting landmarks around Taiwan.
At the event, TRC is selling a limited edition of 30 EMU800-themed train models. The company is also offering baseball-themed stainless steel bento boxes at the venue.
TRC recorded NT$4.64 billion (US$142.8 million) in transportation revenue last year, marking a 9.3% year-on-year increase. Bento sales generated NT$863 million, up 12.8% from 2023, with over 9.2 million boxes sold.
