TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) may consider running for president in 2028 if he is removed from his current post through the DPP-led recall campaign.
Citing sources close to Han, Tai Sounds suggested that should the DPP succeed in ousting Han, it could boost his popularity, setting the stage for a potential presidential bid. Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) is also reportedly eyeing the KMT chair, complicating Han's path to the party’s nomination but not ruling it out entirely.
A KMT insider told Tai Sounds, as the highest-ranking official in the KMT coalition, Han’s ouster could trigger significant political pushback in the 2028 election. The insider added that Han’s grassroots support and ties to key party power brokers could make him a strong contender against Lu in the party’s primary.
Currently, the DPP would need to flip six seats in the Legislative Yuan to gain a majority and 24 to successfully remove Han, per Tai Sounds. KMT Legislator Hsieh Lung-chieh (謝龍介) warned that if the DPP does gain control, it may alter internal legislative rules to make it easier to remove Han. He accused DPP caucus convener Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘) of wanting the speaker position.
Political commentator Grace Woo (吳靜怡), however, argued that amid domestic divisions and external threats, Han should focus on his legislative duties rather than eyeing a presidential bid, per Liberty Times.
