TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Railway enthusiasts can look forward to Taiwan Railways Administration’s annual "Midsummer Formosa Train" event, which this year features one of the country’s two remaining steam locomotives making three nostalgic trips between Yuli and Taitung.
The CT273, known as the "Queen of Steam Locomotives," will pull six Chukuang Express carriages in a five-hour excursion. Tickets are priced at NT$1,888 (US$63) and include a commemorative souvenir. Booking opens on June 6, and tickets are expected to sell out quickly, per CNA.
The "Midsummer Formosa Train" first launched in 2013 to mark the first anniversary of the sister train relationship between Taiwan Railways and the Japan Railway Group. The following year, the CT273 was featured in a special voyage from Hualien to Taitung.
The CT273 was one of Taiwan’s fastest steam trains, capable of reaching speeds up to 100 kilometers per hour. TRA also maintains another steam locomotive, the DT668, nicknamed the "King of Locomotives" for its larger and more powerful build.
This year’s event will run on July 5, July 19, and Aug. 2. The train will depart from Yuli Station and make stops at Fuli, Chihshang, and Guanshan before arriving in Taitung. Along the way, passengers can enjoy the scenic beauty of Taiwan’s East Coast and take part in special activities at each stop—with some lucky travelers receiving surprise gifts.
