TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The National Taiwan Sport University OB team clinched gold at the World Masters Games' 35-and-older men’s baseball category on Wednesday, defeating the Goatbros in the final at Taipei Dome.
Composed mostly of university alumni, NTSU OB rallied from an early deficit to overcome the Goatbros. Both teams featured former players from the Chinese Professional Baseball League.
The game began as a pitchers’ duel, with neither team scoring through the first three innings. The Goatbros broke through in the bottom of the fourth, capitalizing on a series of hits and three consecutive walks to take a 2–0 lead, according to RTI and CNA.
Goatbros captain Chou Szu-chi (周思齊) shone in the top of the fifth with a sliding catch deep in the outfield, followed by a pinpoint throw to first base that doubled off a runner. NTSU OB’s Kao Kuo-hui (高國輝) also made a standout play at third base, diving for a line drive to start a double play.
Momentum shifted in the sixth as NTSU OB loaded the bases, and pinch hitter Chen Chia-feng (陳家豐) delivered a bases-clearing double to put his team ahead. Although the Goatbros tied the score in the bottom of the inning, NTSU OB responded in the seventh with four runs to secure the win.
Despite the loss, Chou said the game was intense and entertaining. He noted that the tournament allowed fans to see that retired players remain active in the baseball community.
The 35+ men’s baseball tournament ran from May 17-25, featuring six teams: Goatbros, Masters Koshien Japan, and Energy in Group A, and Shu OB, NTSU OB, and Fox in Group B.
