TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan warned that China’s two cross-strait exchange events in May are intended to spread propaganda.
China is hosting the Cross-Strait Chinese Culture Summit on Wednesday and the Cross-Strait Media Summit on Thursday, per CNA. The Mainland Affairs Council on Tuesday said these two events are being called cultural exchanges, but they have political implications.
Taiwan’s government said that China had invited Taiwanese media and cultural representatives to Beijing. MAC said that China seeks to lecture them, which does not reflect the true spirit of cultural and educational exchanges.
These events are not innocent cross-strait exchanges, which should be depoliticized, the MAC maintained. It said the CCP uses these exchanges as part of its united front efforts.
These exchanges will not help resolve conflicts nor be recognized by Taiwanese, MAC said. It added it supports healthy and orderly exchanges between the two sides.
MAC also reminded Taiwanese to follow regulations when participating in cross-strait exchange events. It said they should not sign agreements or documents with China without the government’s authorization.
