TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) and New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) squared off in a friendly coed slow-pitch softball game on Sunday as part of the World Masters Games, with teams made up of municipal staff from both cities.
New Taipei batted first, with Hou leading off the game. He reached first base with a hit and later advanced to second, but was tagged out by Chiang while attempting to stretch his run to third, per China Times.
In the bottom of the first inning, Hou took the mound as the starting pitcher, facing Chiang as the leadoff batter. Chiang won the head-to-head matchup by singling to first base.
The game, scheduled for three innings, saw Hou later move to first base while Taipei steadily pulled ahead. Taipei ultimately defeated New Taipei by a score of 9-3.

Both mayors praised each other and their respective teams. Chiang and Hou reached base in both of their at-bats and displayed solid footwork and coordination on defense. Hou complimented Chiang’s athletic ability, batting performance, and defensive skill.
Hou noted it was his first time playing softball and said it was a great opportunity for staff from both cities to build camaraderie through sport.
Taipei team manager Chou Yung-ching (周永慶) said city hall staff had been practicing after work since October, logging 21 practice sessions in total. He added that their skills — and friendships — had grown significantly over time.
