TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of National Defense has approved the Navy’s request to accelerate its light frigate construction project.
Jong Shyn Shipbuilding Company is building one air-defense and one anti-submarine light frigate prototype for the Navy, with each costing approximately NT$4.52 billion (US$150.96 million), per Liberty Times. Both ships are expected to be delivered by October 2026, though the timeline may be moved up.
Once the prototypes are complete, the Navy plans to build 10 additional light frigates. The full program is budgeted at NT$24.54 billion, which covers hull construction, weapon systems, and other components.
The frigates will be equipped with 3D phased array radars, vertical launch systems for air defense missiles, Hsiung Feng III anti-ship missiles, and shipborne drones to counter enemy threats and enhance maritime defense capabilities.
The new ships will replace the Navy’s aging Chi Yang-class frigates and take over maritime security duties.
