TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — MacKay Memorial Hospital said Thursday that it has adopted a robot powered by Nvidia technology to support medical care.
Mackay Memorial Hospital Deputy Director Chen Yu-jen (陳裕仁) said the hospital, together with its technology partner Ubitus, a cloud solutions provider, shared their experience of using robots in medical care at Nvidia GTC Taipei, per CNA.
Chen said the Nvidia-developed system enables the robot to understand voice commands and transport medical specimens, helping to reduce the workload of healthcare staff. According to Nvidia, these robots are created using advanced 8K facial scanning and are powered by Ubitus' AI model, which integrates Nvidia technologies such as Nvidia Audio2Face 3D for expressions and Nvidia Riva for speech recognition.
The hospital also plans to introduce robotic dogs, with initial testing focused on the emergency department due to its complex and fast-paced patient workflows, Chen said.
The hospital will also test "Virtual Human" technology in the emergency department. Chen said the virtual individual will appear on a screen and conduct medical interviews, provide patient care, and collect data as part of efforts to create a comprehensive smart healthcare environment.
The hospital said that it has also utilized Nvidia's MONAI framework for medical image analysis to help doctors interpret lung CT scans and brain MRIs. Chen noted that using AI to perform preliminary analysis and highlight potential lesions can reduce diagnostic time by 20% to 30%.
According to NVIDIA, MONAI is a free, community-supported AI framework designed specifically for medical imaging. It helps developers more effectively build and train deep learning models for healthcare.
Chen added that Nvidia-powered robots can help convert voice-based medical interviews into multiple languages, facilitating collaboration with healthcare institutions worldwide.
Taiwan has demonstrated strong performance in medical quality, national health insurance, AI applications, and GPU computing power, the hospital said. It hopes its commitment to smart healthcare will help elevate Taiwan's medical capabilities.
