TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The risks for Taiwanese traveling to China have increased as 89 are now missing or detained in the country, the Mainland Affairs Council said Wednesday.
MAC Minister Chiu Chui-cheng (邱垂正) told lawmakers the figure included all the cases from January 2024 until April 30, 2025, per CNA. There were also 13 cases where Taiwanese had been investigated or had their freedom of movement temporarily restricted, he said.
Chiu said the government would continue to point out the risks of traveling to China. The Mainland Affairs Council said that, bearing in mind the freedom of travel, it advised Taiwanese planning a trip to China to register on its website first.
From the beginning of 2023 until the end of last month, 86,387 people registered with the service, Chiu said. He also told legislators the government wanted to increase knowledge of China in schools by teaching about the development and recent situation of cross-strait relations.
Students thinking of continuing their studies in China should be aware of the risks and of its “united front” efforts to target Taiwan’s youth with propaganda, the minister said.
