TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A dynamic runway show in New Taipei’s Xinzhuang District will showcase the fusion of traditional neighborhood culture and contemporary fashion on Saturday.
The event features 40 exclusive designs by Taiwanese designer Gioia Pan (潘怡良), who reinterprets temple culture through a modern lens. Collaborating with local universities and the city government, Pan transforms cultural icons into a unique design narrative blending Eastern heritage with futuristic aesthetics, according to organizers and the New Taipei City Government.
Pan’s collection merges spiritual faith, folk symbols, and regional music into modern fashion. Temple street scenes, featuring the Guan Jiang Shou, rhythmic drumming, and the melodies of traditional Beiguan music, served as key inspirations.
The Guan Jiang Shou and Ba Jia Jiang form Taiwan’s temple military array, meant to ward off evil spirits and uphold justice. The tradition dates back to Xinzhuang’s grand temple parade in 1912, with Dizang Temple recognized as the birthplace of this iconic cultural formation.
The event will showcase VRstate, developed by Taiwan’s leading electronics manufacturer, Inventec. This platform will let guests explore Temple Street’s history through immersive 3D metaverse experiences on the runway.
Beyond fashion, the event includes a cultural market, live DJ sets, and musical performances. The market spotlights innovative works by local brands and emerging vendors, celebrating collaborations that merge modern creativity with cultural heritage.
Among the participants, Ug Tea will present limited-edition cup holders adorned with neighborhood motifs, while British footwear brand Clarks adds an international flair.
The fashion show will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Luna Plaza. Organizers recommend arriving early, as large crowds are expected.
The event is part of the Cultural Affairs Department's “Trends and Culture in Xinzhuang” program, running from May 16 to June 22. The program features performances, exhibitions, guided walks, and stamp collecting, inviting residents and visitors to explore Temple Street and experience the renewed cultural vitality of this century-old neighborhood.
Temple Street, also known as Xinzhuang Old Street, is the earliest developed area in Xinzhuang’s history. Once a bustling port landing, it grew into a vibrant community hub thanks to thriving trade and the concentration of temples and businesses.
