TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Actor Nono Chen (陳宣裕) was found guilty of attempted rape and sentenced to two years and six months in prison on Tuesday.
Prosecutors had charged him with seven counts of sexual assault against six women, but the Shilin District Court ruled there was insufficient evidence in six of the cases. Appeals are still possible, but the Shilin District Prosecutors Office said it would first read the verdict before deciding on appeals, per CNA.
According to the court, Chen asked the victim for contact details during the recording of a TV show in 2011. Later that day, he repeatedly contacted her, offering to driver her home in his car. She initially refused, but later agreed as she trusted his reputation as a prominent entertainer, the court said.
However, he drove her to a parking lot in Taipei’s Dadaocheng area, where he assaulted her. It was only because she kept resisting and dropped to the floor between the car’s front and back seats that he gave up, according to the court.
Friends and relatives testified in court that they had heard the victim’s story and had found her to have changed after the incident. As a result, the court concluded she had been speaking the truth about Chen’s attack.
Because the victim feared Chen’s influence as a prominent entertainer, she had initially not reported the incident to the police. It was only because of the “Me Too” movement, when more victims made similar allegations public, that she came forward, the court said.
Chen denied he knew the victim, and rejected the allegations. He also failed to come to an agreement about compensation, leading to prosecutors demanding a severe sentence.
In the other cases, the court ruled there was insufficient evidence as the charges were based on isolated accusations by the alleged victims. The accusations included three counts of rape, one attempted rape, and two counts of forcible indecent assault.
