TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A group of 28 Guatemalan university students and faculty members has begun a three-week intensive training course under the Semiconductor Vocational Training Program launched by Taiwan and Guatemala last month.
The 28 participants are from leading Guatemalan universities and began the program last Thursday, CNA reported.
The trainees will visit high-tech institutions such as the Taiwan Printed Circuit Association, Hsinchu Science Park, and the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University International Incubation Center. They will also gain in-depth knowledge of Taiwan’s industry-academia collaboration model.
The students will become seed instructors for Guatemala’s semiconductor industry, Taiwan’s embassy in Guatemala said.
During the program’s launch ceremony, Taiwan’s Ambassador to Guatemala, Vivia Chang (張俊菲), described the program as a milestone that showcases the results of Taiwan and Guatemala’s cooperation.
Guatemala Minister of Economy Gabriela Garcia-Quinn said her country has mapped out a future vision called the “Chip Path,” in partnership with Taiwan’s embassy, aiming to position Guatemala as an emerging player in semiconductor manufacturing.
Garcia-Quinn also thanked Taiwan for supporting Guatemala and sharing its world-leading semiconductor expertise.
The semiconductor training program comes as Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, located in Guatemala City, is developing the nation's first-ever nanochip. Guatemala seeks to become a leader in chip research and design, manufacturing, and production in Central America.
