TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The number of births fell to its lowest-ever level of 8,684 in April, with Taiwan’s overall population recording a decline for the 16th month running, the Ministry of the Interior confirmed Friday.
Taiwan counted a population of 23,365,274 in April, or 9,468 fewer than in March and 49,826 fewer than in April 2024, per CNA. The decline averages out at 136.51 per day, according to ministry data.
Looking at the changes per area, Taoyuan recorded the largest population increase during April, at 1.02%, followed by Hsinchu County with 0.98% and Taichung with 0.55%. The most rapid decline was registered in the outlying island counties of Lienchiang and Kinmen, at 2.05% and 1.96% respectively, while Taipei lost 1.74% of its population in April.
The ministry also compiled wedding and divorce information for April, finding 6,520 new couples, including 167 same-sex couples. The number of divorces reached 4,334, including 81 same-sex couples who went their separate ways.
Migration records showed 73,023 people had moved to Taiwan, a drop from 99,311 in March. The number of people leaving Taiwan fell from 98,991 to 73,970, resulting in a deficit of 947 for April.
