TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan at 6:09 p.m. on Monday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
The epicenter was located 34.9 kilometers east-southeast of Hualien County Hall at a depth of 6.1 kilometers, the CWA said.
Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7 to measure the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location. The quake registered an intensity level of 4 in Hualien County.
An intensity level of 3 was recorded in Taichung, Taitung County, New Taipei, Yunlin County, Changhua County, and Chiayi County. A level 1 was reported in Taoyuan, Miaoli County, Hsinchu County, Taipei, Hsinchu, Chiayi, Kaohsiung, Tainan, and Keelung.
